swords and the sabre

From the cutting and splitting weapon in Russia were disseminated the swords, knives and sabres. Sword consisted of the broad, sharp from two sides band, i.e., blade, and of kryzha - the handle, whose parts were named: apple, cheren and flint. Each flat side of blade was called "golomen'", or "golomya", and point - by "blades". On golomenyakh made one wide or several narrow grooves. Blades were made from steel or iron. Sword was packed into the scabbards, upholstered with the skin or velvet. Scabbards were done from iron and were decorated with gold or silver incisions. Sword hung up to the belt with the aid of two rings, located on the mouth of scabbards.
The knives, which were being used by Old-Russian soldiers, were several specific. The short knives with two blades, hooked by hook on the belt, were called "waist". Knives, somewhat longer and wider, than waist, with one convex toward the end blade, were called "podsaydashnymi". These knives hung up to the belt from the left side. Knives with the curved blade, which was called "shlyakom", that were being rushed after the top of a boot of right boot, so were named - "zasapozhnye".
In the southern regions of ancient Russia from THE X century already won acceptance the sabre. In the Novgorod earth the sabre entered into the custom later - approximately from THE XIII century. Sabre consisted of strip and handle - "kryzha". The sharp side of sabre had blade and tyl'e. Handle was collected from the flint, cherena and knob, into which through the small opening put through the cord - "sword-knot".
